An original production-made miniature testing maquette created for Aardman’s acclaimed 2000 stop-motion feature film, Chicken Run.

This highly characterful piece was produced during the development and testing of the guard dog puppet associated with Mr. Tweedy, providing a fascinating insight into the practical character-development and stop-motion production process behind the film.

The maquette is constructed from modelling clay over an internal wire armature, allowing the sculpted figure to establish the proportions, shape and articulation required for the eventual puppet. The piece features the distinctive, deliberately simplified forms characteristic of Chicken Run’s stop-motion production design.

The maquette exhibits expected production wear and deterioration consistent with its age, original use and construction from modelling clay. Over time, both front legs have become distorted and are somewhat out of shape, while a portion of the modelling clay is missing from the front left foot. There is also visible cracking in several areas, most notably around the neck, both front legs and the tail. Additional minor surface marks, handling wear and imperfections can be seen throughout the piece. Included with the maquette are some small pieces of clay that have become dislodged from the maquette.
