An original Skeletorious Gladiator helmet used in the production of Ridley Scott’s acclaimed 2000 historical epic Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe.
 
In the film, this distinctive style of helmet is worn by two Gladiators, both identified as Skeletorious, who attempt to kill Maximus (Russell Crowe) during his first and second matches in the Zucchabar Arena. The striking skeletal design makes this helmet one of the more distinctive pieces of Gladiator armour featured during these early arena sequences.
 
It cannot currently be confirmed whether this particular example was used on screen or retained as a production spare, or which of the two Gladiators known as Skeletorious it may have been intended for. This distinction is worth noting.
 
The helmet is constructed from fibreglass mixed with metal powder, with areas of textured detailing designed to replicate the appearance of battle-worn metal. It comprises two sections, front and back, which are secured together at either side with laced leather cord. A square of leather has been adhered over the interior seam at the crown. The interior also retains its original padding, designed to provide comfort for the performer during filming.
 
The helmet remains in very good production-used condition, displaying additional wear consistent with its use during the production of the film.

Released in 2000 and directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator follows Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius, whose life is destroyed after the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the rise to power of his ambitious son, Commodus. Betrayed, enslaved and forced into the gladiatorial arena, Maximus rises through the ranks of the Colosseum, driven by a desire for vengeance and a determination to return to Rome and confront the man responsible for the murder of his family.
