An exceptional original hand-drawn concept design created for the 1973 British horror anthology film The Vault of Horror. This piece was designed and signed by Tony Curtis, the film’s production designer. Executed in pen and ink with wash detailing, the artwork depicts the intricate interior layout of an “Indian Bazaar,” showcasing Curtis’s distinctive architectural style and eye for atmospheric composition.
This concept art offers a fascinating glimpse into the visual development process of a classic 1970s horror film and serves as a remarkable example of traditional production design craftsmanship.
The artwork measures approximately 26 inches x 17.5 inches and remains in fine vintage condition.
Signed and dated by Tony Curtis, Production Designer, 1972.
It remains in good vintage condition, showing light signs of age and handling consistent with production use. The paper has been previously rolled, resulting in some visible fold lines, and there is creasing across the surface in places. Minor edge wear is present, particularly along the margins, but the image area itself is clean and well-preserved. The ink and wash tones remain rich and unfaded,
This British horror anthology film, produced by Amicus Productions and directed by Roy Ward Baker, presents five macabre tales linked by a chilling framing story. Five men find themselves trapped in the basement of a mysterious office building. As they settle in, each recounts a recurring nightmare — stories of greed, revenge, murder, and the supernatural.
The segments — “Midnight Mess,” “The Neat Job,” “This Trick’ll Kill You,” “Bargain in Death,” and “Drawn and Quartered” — unfold with dark irony, each culminating in a twist of poetic justice. As the men’s stories end, the grim truth is revealed: they are not dreamers, but damned souls doomed to relive their sins for eternity.
In the tradition of Tales from the Crypt (1972), The Vault of Horror combines gothic atmosphere with wry morality, delivering a classic example of 1970s British portmanteau horror.
